TKD Sport Returns
Saturday 12th June saw the successful return of TKD Sport hosted at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth, by Masters Sheena Sutherland and Sandy Dunbar. Competitors and officials from Spain, Norway, Ireland and of course Scotland took part. Crowds were treated to a first class display of Taekwon Do skill in pattern and sparring divisions, followed by a fantastic team sparring event which culminated in an electrifying international friendly between Ireland and Scotland which included without doubt some of the best sparring of the day.
For those who have never heard of TKD Sport, it is an international open competition which has always been held in Scotland (the last one in 1996) and in the ‘90s was considered by many to be a warm up event for the World and European Championships. In its heyday competitors travelled from all over Europe and South America to attend, in fact so numerous were the competitors that on several occasions it became a two day event with coloured belts on day one and black belts on day two. Something which the organising committee hope to emulate in the not too distant future.
Whilst TKD Sport 2010 was a smaller, more intimate competition than previous TKD Sport events the quality of the competitors was, as ever, extremely high from junior coloured belt right through to senior black belt level. All who attended, competitors, spectators and officials had a great day with many who were old enough to remember (mentioning no names!) commenting how the old TKD Sport atmosphere was in the air.
Planning for an even bigger, better TKD Sport in September 2011 has already began so put it in your diary, get training and we’ll see you there!
